Course Description
This course focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to promote the positive and healthy nurturing of children, with particular emphasis on the critical importance of the early years to human development. Students will learn how to meet the developmental needs of young children, communicate, and discipline effectively, and guide early behaviour. They will have practical experiences with infants, toddlers, and preschoolers, and will learn skills in researching and investigating questions relating to parenting.

Unit 1 Preparation for Parenthood
Unit 2 Environmental Influences on Preconception, Conception, Pregnancy, and Child Development from Birth to Age Three
Unit 3 The Diversity and Universal Concerns of Parenting 26 hours
Unit 4 The Social and Legal Challenges of Parenting

Course Evaluation
All work submitted in this course will be assessed and evaluated using the standards set by the Ontario Ministry of Education.
Student’s performance is evaluated on assignments (oral and written), research projects, reports, presentations, co-operative learning group work, practical applications, quizzes and unit tests/activities. The evaluation of student achievement demonstrated in this course is based on the following four categories of the achievement chart:

(A) Ongoing Course Work – 70%     (B) Summative Evaluation – 30%

Learning Skills and Work habits

Students are evaluated not only on the content they have learned by six learning skills and work habit that evaluate key student work habits and are considered essential skills. These learning skills and work habits evaluated on your report card are:

These six attributes are evaluated on a scale of Excellent (E), Good (G), Satisfactory (S), and Needs (N).

EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS:

To all students; please note that each teacher will have their own expectations and rules for their classroom (separate from the rules/expectations of the hallways and common areas of the school). This could change with each teacher and classroom you visit. Please be sure to review the following expectations carefully and follow them when in their classroom.

GENERAL SCHOOL RULES

Late/absence policy – please see agenda if you would like to use school policy
Use of technological devices in the classroom – NO cell phones at ALL!!!!
NO wearing of hats in the classroom.

CLASSROOM RULES AND EXPECTATIONS
Attendance: Regular attendance is mandatory. In order to ensure success in the course, students are expected to be punctual and to attend class regularly. Students are to come prepared with their textbook (if required), notebook, handouts, and writing tools.

Behaviour: Students are also expected to respect their peers and teachers; inappropriate behaviour and attitude will not be tolerated and will be dealt with disciplinary action if needed.

Missed Class: If a student misses a class, it is the student’s responsibility to catch up on missed work and to see the teacher to ensure that all the material covered in the class is clearly understood.

Assignments: Students are expected to hand in all assignments on time. Unless given a legitimate excuse, late assignments will not be accepted after I mark, and return assignments back to the class. If the student is experiencing difficulty completing an assignment, please do not hesitate to see the teacher for extra assistance. ***Remediation (Monday to Thursday, 11:35 to 12:00 noon) is the time to do this.

Test Policy
If a student is absent for a unit test or major culminating assignment a doctor’s note must be provided for the student’s absence. The doctor’s note should state the reason for the absence, the date of the absence(s), and should have the medical office’s contact information.
